Perry was born the 25th of July 1968 in Chicago In Illinois, she was the child of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Because of their fear of stress, the parents did not want to see performing before turning age 18. Perry stated that she was too timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began performing at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she got small roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry back to California and theater roles were readily available. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. In the same year, her character was cast the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's role. The actress was chosen for the role despite her close family connection to the character.
